Egyptian Finger Cymbal Workshop

Sunday, 18 July 2010 3:00 - 5:00 pm at the Bethesda Studio The workshop is listed at the bottom. $30.00 in advance / $35.00 at the door.

In conjunction with the finger cymbal CD pair that Sands of Time Music has released, this will be a hands-on opportunity to learn how to play the Egyptian "clam shell" method. You will learn how to:

String one-holed sagat
Hold them in the clam-shell fashion
Hand and arm positions "ghawazee" style
Make them "talk" + 4 other sounds
Use Egyptian phrasing to interpret the music
Traditional patterns used by the ghawazee in the 1800s
History of Egyptian finger cymbals

If there is time, I will show previously unreleased footage of Egyptian dancers playing finger cymbals, including Aiza Sharif, Naima Akef, Shoo Shoo Amin, Fifi Abdou and Sohair Zuki.

I will have available for sale limited quantities of sagats. If you know that you would like to purchase a set before hand, please contact me so that I can bring extra sets. (They are heavy, so I am trying not to be weighed down if I can avoid it.) They can be purchased on line here.
