ARTEMIS’ NEWS:
I have lots of workshops lined up for 2009, Texas, California, Montana, Australia, Colorado, Chicago, Utah, New Jersey and North Carolina. In 2010, I will be in Japan, Boston and California. area. There are still some dates available in 2009 and lots of dates free for 2010. As for my future retirement in 3 years.. I announced this a few years ago and have had some interesting replies. I have heard from people who expressed their sadness that I had quit dancing. I HAVE NOT, NOT, NOT QUIT DANCING NOR DO I INTEND TO!!!! I DO intend to retire from performing and touring and this will take place some time WITHIN THE NEXT 3 YEARS. I have no idea of the exact date but I am notifying you in case you have thought of inviting me for a future workshop. I am accepting bookings for 2009, 2010 and beyond. I intend to keep dancing a great deal until and AFTER I retire from touring. After I quit touring, I will continue teaching and coaching locally, and I will be writing and researching dance indefinitely. But after 36 years of dancing and 17 years on the road, I prefer to be home more. I miss my husband and my parents need more of my help as they grow older. In addition to touring, I am turning my attention towards my future DVDs, to symposiums in the academic circles and to writing (and FINALLY rewriting) my articles, manuscripts and books.
I am looking for workshops in the following areas: I LOVE TO COME BACK TO PLACES WHERE I HAVE ALREADY BEEN. In the last 17 years, I have taught and/or performed in hundreds of workshops in 10 countries and 29 states in America. I thought it would be fun to be able to say that I have hit all 50 states. I already have plans to teach in Utah, Montana, so that leaves only 14 more states! Therefore, I am particularly interested in performing and teaching workshops, master classes or specialty classes in the all the places where I have been before AND in remaining states: Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Mississippi, South Carolina, Vermont and New Hampshire. I also want to go to or return to teach and perform in England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Russia, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, New Zealand, Switzerland and France (I can teach in French as well as English). If you want me to come to these states or countries, please contact your local sponsors and ask them to let me know. And, of course, cymbals, etc).I have lots of new Turkish and Rromany (Gypsy) material and other material that is not specifically Turkish (such as drum solo, veil, taksim, improvisation skills, finger cymbals and more). Please go to the website for a list of my workshop topics. (www.serpentine.org).
I am working on a new finger cymbal CD, “Zill Speak” with Sands of Time at Yasmin's Serpentine Communications.
I have three articles out or on their way. They are or will be on Gilded Serpent. "Journey into Womanhood" is there now at:
http://www.gildedserpent.com/art43/artjourny.htm
I have a new article out on the life story of the legendary musician Freddie Elias. And the most recent article is on our need to focus on the Three Ss: Security, Stability and Safety in this time of great change in America.
I will be hosting two identical Totally Turkish 5 day intensive in July of 2009 in my home studio in Maryland (scroll down for more details). If you are interested, please let me know. Attendees are invited to stay at my house pajama party style so they can save money (room permitting, first come first serve, so register early).
I have a brand new weeklong workshop on Rromany dance, music and culture throughout the world.
And I continue working on my new Turkish Oriental and Rromany instructional and documentary DVDs.

FOLK TOURS NEWS: We had to cancel the 6th Annual Folk Tours Middle Eastern Dance and Music Camp in 2008 was wonderful. We had to cancel the 7th US Folk Tours camp for 2009. Our camp location accepted an offer from a larger group that offered to pay them more despite our contract with them. We were looking forward to a fabulous camp in May and this was a great shock to us. We did not tell anybody about this because we hoped to find another location. Tayyar rushed back to America and he tried very hard to find another location but on such short notice, he was not able to find a place that was both available and that met our qualifications. We very, very much apologize to you, our friends, our staff and our helpers. We know you look forward to our annual event just as much as we do. As we have been getting the word out, the response has been very supportive and full of understanding. We thank you for this. This is not the end of Folk Tours though. We will be focusing on weekend events, intensives, seminars and concerts in NY and else where. Please see our new website at www.folktours.com and we will use this as the main vehicle to let you know about future events. The 4th Folk Tours AlaTurka Middle Eastern Dance and Music Festival in Istanbul in July of 2008 was great and Tayyar plans to have next year’s festival July 5 - 13, 2009. Please go to www.folktours.com for more info. Tayyar's fabulous new “Turkish Rhythm” CD has 20 instructional tracks and 5 performance tracks. It got the top rating from Guided Serpent.
